| Stan Reynolds massive sale, Wetaskiwin AB |
Made my third trip out there on March 30. Stan has collected throughout many decades a truly massive amount of vintage automobiles and parts and it is now being made available to the public at Wetaskiwin, Alberta. There are several hundred multiple make vehicles, largely donor car quality, from the teens to the 60's lined up in the back field and they are motivated to sell at generally reasonable cost. Among these are a number of Hudson built cars (Stan and/or his Father sold Hudsons at one time) including at least a dozen Stepdowns, about five '37 Terraplanes, several from the 1940's and a few Essex autos. See the gallery for a sample of photos.
In a large building they have set out in an organized fashion thousands of parts for many makes and if you know of someone looking for brass era headlamps or side lamps they have a tremendous selection of these. As the inventory sells it is replenished with items from their stock supply yet in storage. Hudson parts seen: radio and speaker for I believe 1939 $275CDN.; radio control head for 34-35 $150; hubcaps; and some nice Essex rad shrouds.
They are only open on weekdays but will be open all weekend to attract patrons from the 37th Annual Red Deer Swap Meet which is on May 4-5,2007.
This makes a great destination for the old car lover and the parts hunter. For those from further distances away you could easily allow another day to visit the world-class Reynolds-Alberta Museum located 1/2 mile away.

Folks,
I am reposting here a nice writeup by Mark Hudson on the upgrading of the Dana 44 rear ends for Hudsons. Its really great info for the Hudson community and I wanted it easily accessible. Here it is:
I wanted to resurrect this thread to bring some more information to light regarding the Dana 44 rear end.
As you may know, the Fairborn Axle conversion to update to flanged axles is available even now. However, budgets being tight for yours truly, I wanted to do something a bit more sequential in terms of spending my money and eventually getting to the same place. The Fairborn Kit is $495.00. The original tapered axles are 19 spline to work with your existing carrier, or they can have axles made that have the newer 30 spline end.
I called the folks at Reider Racing, as Park suggested. The reason was to hunt down the different carriers that are still made for 19 spline axles.
Something interesting came up in the discussion. The original limited slip carrier as used by both Studebaker and the original 427 Shelby Cobra (Dana 44 equipped), is still available new. And guess what, its 19 spline. And, its the preferred piece for restorers of the previous mentioned vehicles as it is able to be certified as original. Reported by Reider also to be the best limited slip/positraction carrier out there for street driven vehicles.
Link to the Carrier in question:
http://www.reiderracing.com/danapowrlok.htm
Its an original Dana Powr-Lock. Cost is $400.00
This means, you can replicate the Jack Clifford hop up of using a Studebaker Twin-Track (Its actually the Dana Powr-Lok) with the rear ratio of your choice, which is also Dana original gears @ $159.00.
By using a 19 spline carrier, you can get up and going with your original tapered axles and be able to switch to the Fairborn flanged axles of 19 spline later.
Or, all at once.
You will also have to buy a new pinion yoke for the finer pinion splines produced currently.
Dana Power-Lock = $400.00
Dana Ring Gear and Pinion = $159.00
Dana 44 Overhaul kit = $100.00
New pinion yoke = $30.00
For $689.00, you have a posi-traction Dana 44 rear end of the ratio of your choosing. That you can also update with flanged axles for and additional $495.00. If the flanged axles are a bit much, you can run your original tapered/hubbed axles.
If it was good enough for Carroll Shelby - I think it will hold about as much as anybody here is going to unleash upon it.
and the good thing is, nobody will be able to tell anything about it - Its all Hudson from the outside with no fuss in the swapping.

Folks,
I have been working with Larry over at Clifford Performance to try and get us some new intake options for our Hudsons. Its getting very hard to find stock Hudson Twin H intakes so we have been trying to devise a plan to cast a new Aluminum Twin H intake based on the stock Hudson Twin H intake. Without a doubt this intake design is the best there is. So we want to copy it for the new intake and make the carb options more varied so we can mount dual single barrel carbs or dual two barrels. The newer Weber carbs are a better option as they have better metering and parts can be changed out when tuning your engine to get the best economy and performance.
To cover the tooling costs we need 20 people to agree to preorder the intake. They would sell for $350 which is a good price for a new intake. |

| Setting Up a Parts Room For Dealers Circa 1954 |
I have always wondered about the transition year 1954. Hudson had merged with Nash to form American Motors and it seemed to me like Hudson was absorbed into Nash and not a partnership of equals. I don't have to tell anyone here that Hudson was the superior engineering company. Nash had more working capital so became the dominant company which is a discussion I will tackle later.
What I find telling is that during the year 1955 old long time Hudson dealers were defecting in droves, most became dealers for the big three. |

| New Brunswick Hudson parts |
On Sept. 24 I travelled to a small town called Pettitcodiac, which is about 20 minutes outside of Moncton, NB. I had heard about the estate auction of Booie Jackson, a long time Hudson fanatic, from my Hudson friend in Ft. McMurray, Martin Tabbert. There was a lot of good stuff at very reasonable prices, but I was limited to what I could bring home on the airplane. An NOS 37 Hudson front fender sold for $50.00 Canadian would have been nice to have, but it probably would not have fit in my suitcase. NOS fenders and trunk lid for about a 1940 hudson sold for less money. I talked with the fellow that bought 3 front fenders, one was NOS and the others were nice, for a short wheelbase stepdown. If anyone is interested in these I can put you in touch with him. There were dozens of hubcaps and other items sold by the lot that were almost free. |
